On February 27, ON Semiconductor, a leader in smart power and smart sensing technology, announced the launch of the 1200V SPM31 smart power module ( IPM). The SPM31 IPM is more energy efficient, smaller, and has higher power density than other leading solutions on the market, resulting in lower overall system cost. Because these IPMs integrate optimized IGBTs for higher efficiency, they are ideally suited for three-phase variable frequency drive applications such as heat pumps, commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and industrial pumps and fans.
It is estimated that about 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from operating residential and commercial buildings, of which indirect emissions such as heating, cooling and building power supply account for about 18%. As governments around the world work to meet their energy and climate commitments, more energy-efficient, lower-carbon solutions are becoming increasingly important.

The SPM31 IPM controls the power flow to inverter compressors and fans in heat pump and air conditioning systems by regulating the frequency and voltage of the three-phase motor supply to achieve outstanding efficiency. For example, ON Semiconductor's 25A SPM31 with FS7 technology reduces power loss by up to 10% and increases power density by up to 9% compared to the previous generation. With the electrification trend and higher energy efficiency requirements, these modules enable manufacturers to significantly improve the design of heating and cooling systems while improving energy efficiency. ON Semiconductor's SPM31 IPM series products use FS7 technology to provide better performance, achieve high energy efficiency and lower energy consumption, further reducing harmful emissions around the world.
These highly integrated modules include gate drive ICs, various built-in module protection functions and FS7 IGBTs to achieve excellent thermal performance and support a wide current range from 15A to 35A. The SPM31 FS7 IGBT IPM has ultra-high power density and is an ideal solution to save mounting space, improve performance expectations, and shorten development time. In addition, the SPM31 IPM offers the following benefits:
· Gate drive and protection controls
· Low loss, short circuit resistant IGBT
· Each phase has an IGBT half-bridge negative terminal to support various control algorithms
· Built-in under voltage protection (UVP)
· Built-in bootstrap diode and resistor
· Built-in high-speed and high-voltage integrated circuit
· Single ground power supply
